There was a moment of panic in Osun State on Wednesday after a podium carrying Governor Ademola Adeleke and other top government officials suddenly collapsed during a political rally in Ijebu-Jesa.

A video circulating online captured the dramatic moment the structure gave way while guests were seated on the platform during the inauguration of Imole canvassers for the Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency.

Among those reportedly on the podium when it collapsed were Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi, Speaker of the State House of Assembly Adewale Egbedun, and Imole Campaign Council spokesperson Pelumi Olajengbesi.

Witnesses said musical performances were ongoing when the event anchor was preparing to introduce the next item on the programme before the platform suddenly caved in.

A source at the venue said the incident briefly disrupted proceedings and prompted security personnel to quickly evacuate those trapped in the rubble.

“The governor and some members of his cabinet were seated in that part of the podium that collapsed. No casualty. The event resumed, and the governor addressed the gathering after the incident,” the source said.

Reacting to the incident, the governor’s deputy spokesperson, Oladele Bamiji, dismissed reports suggesting a serious accident.

“The event thereafter went on smoothly with the governor and members of his cabinet. No injuries. Had there been any fatal accident, the event would not have continued,” he said.

According to Bamiji, Governor Adeleke later proceeded to another official engagement in Odo-Otin Local Government Area after the rally.

Despite the scare, officials confirmed that no deaths or injuries were recorded.
