POCHETTINO HAILS COLLECTIVE EFFORT AFTER USA’S EMPHATIC WORLD CUP START.
United States men’s football team coach Mauricio Pochettino praised his team’s
collective spirit after their 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their opening World Cup
match.
The hosts delivered a statement performance, with Folarin Balogun scoring twice to
become the first American player to net a brace in a World Cup game since 1930.
Despite standout displays from Balogun, Christian Pulisic, and Weston McKennie,
Pochettino refused to single out individuals.
“It was the collective approach,” he said. “The players, the staff, everyone worked
together. That is why we got this result.”
The former Tottenham and Chelsea manager also paid tribute to the supporters,
believing their energy helped drive the team forward.
“Amazing, they were amazing,” Pochettino said of the fans. “We can do amazing
things if the fans are in this way.”
While delighted with the performance, the Argentine stressed that the United States
must remain grounded.
“We are happy with the result, but this is only the beginning. The World Cup is a long
competition and we need to keep improving,” he added.
Pochettino also highlighted the benefit of having an extended preparation period
before the tournament.
“Being together for weeks allowed us to work with the players, not only select them.
That time has been very important for us.”
The victory showcased the hosts’ attacking quality, although there was concern after
Pulisic was withdrawn at half-time with a calf knock.
The United States will continue its Group D campaign against Turkey and Australia
as they look to build on an impressive start.
