South Africa made history on Tuesday by reaching the World Cup knockout stage for
the first time after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Korea secured second place
in Group A.

South Korea created better chances early on, with Aubrey Modiba clearing Kim
Min-Jae’s header off the line before Lee Kang-In and Oh Hyeon-Gyu both went
close.

However, Bafana Bafana grew into the contest and found the decisive breakthrough
just after the hour mark, when Tshepang Maseko fired past Kim Seung-Gyu from
inside the penalty area.

South Korea pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but South Africa
defended resolutely to seal a famous victory and spark jubilant celebrations among
their supporters.

The result sends South Africa into the Round of 32 for the first time in its history,
where they will face Canada, while South Korea’s qualification hopes now hang by a
thread.
