SWITZERLAND BEAT CANADA TO TOP GROUP B.
Switzerland secured top spot in Group B with a 2-1 victory over Canada in
Vancouver, although both nations advanced to the World Cup Round of 32.
After a goalless first half, Ruben Vargas broke the deadlock less than a minute after
the restart, finishing Johan Manzambi’s low cross at the back post.
Switzerland doubled its advantage shortly after when Manzambi capped a fine
performance by firing home his third goal of the tournament, following good work from
Breel Embolo.
Canada responded through substitute Promise David, who volleyed home after
Nathan Saliba’s clever assist, but the co-hosts could not find a late equaliser despite
mounting pressure in the closing stages.
The victory sees Switzerland finish first in the group and progress to a fourth
consecutive World Cup group stage, while Canada advances to the knockout rounds
for the first time in their history.
