Ademola Lookman has called his decision to switch international allegiance from England to Nigeria one of the most defining moments of his career.
The 2024 CAF African Footballer of the Year told ARISE TV that choosing to represent the Super Eagles transformed his life both on and off the pitch.
“Without doubt, it changed my career and my life,” said the 27-year-old. “People know that. This is my home. This is my place. I enjoy it here. I am the son of the soil.”
Born in London, Lookman represented England at youth level before committing to Nigeria—a move that coincided with his rise to prominence.
He became a household name after scoring a stunning hat-trick in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen to deliver Atalanta their first European title.
Now considered one of the most in-form attackers in Europe, Lookman credits his breakthrough to discipline, belief, and daily consistency.
He also reflected on tough moments in his journey, including a missed penalty during a loan spell at Fulham.
“Every day, I try to improve myself, both on and off the pitch. That consistency and mindset have really helped me,” he said.
The CAF award, he added, was more than just silverware. “It’s amazing. Honestly, I won’t lie to you, it’s a privilege. I take it with real pride.”
Lookman recently returned to Lagos to present the award to President Bola Tinubu and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
He also visited Phase 2, the neighbourhood where he grew up with his grandmother and father.
“It was really important for me to bring this award back home,” he said. “Bringing it back to Lagos means everything.”
Despite the accolades, Lookman insists his journey is far from over. “Definitely not. Retirement is nowhere in my thoughts. Not even close. There’s still a long journey ahead.”
His form has attracted interest from top Premier League sides, including Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United.
Atalanta have reportedly placed a €50 million price tag on their star forward.
