Mauricio Pochettino has dismissed talk of a return to Tottenham Hotspur, calling the idea “not realistic” as he continues his early tenure as head coach of the United States national team.
The Argentine has been linked with the vacant Spurs job following the sacking of Ange Postecoglou, who was removed from his role despite delivering the club’s first trophy in 17 years with a Europa League triumph.
Postecoglou’s departure sparked immediate speculation about a potential reunion with Pochettino, who previously managed the club from 2014 to 2019.
However, speaking after a 2-1 loss to Turkey in Connecticut, Pochettino made his stance clear.
“Today it’s not realistic,” he said. “Look where I am. Look where we are. The answer is so clear. Since I left in 2019, my name has always been on the list. I’ve seen the rumours. There are a hundred coaches on that list. Don’t be worried about it.”
Pochettino was appointed in October 2024 and has overseen nine matches in charge, registering five wins and four losses.
His side is currently on a three-game losing streak just over a year out from hosting the 2026 World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico.
Despite leaving the door slightly open for the future, Pochettino emphasised that his full attention is on the US national team.
“If something happens in the future, you will see. But I am very happy at this moment. We cannot talk about this type of thing.”
During his time in North London, Pochettino guided Spurs to a Champions League final in 2019 and a second-place finish in the Premier League in 2017.
His name continues to carry weight among supporters, but Tottenham are now exploring other candidates.
Brentford boss Thomas Frank is among the leading contenders for the vacancy, with Fulham manager Marco Silva also attracting interest.
For now, Pochettino remains focused on a new challenge far from the Premier League spotlight.
