Nigeria’s Super Falcons launch their bid for an unprecedented tenth Women’s Africa Cup of Nations crown by 5pm today in Casablanca, determined to remind the continent who reigns supreme in women’s football.

Coach Justine Madugu has urged caution and focus ahead of their Group B opener against Tunisia at the Stade Larbi Zaouli, warning that no opponent can be underestimated in the modern African game.

“They are not minnows any longer,” Madugu said on Saturday. “We’re not taking anybody for granted. No games will be easy. Every team deserves respect.”

The Falcons arrive in Morocco in solid form, having picked up notable wins over Algeria, Cameroon, and Ghana in recent months.

Yet the bitter memory of their semi-final exit on penalties to Morocco in 2022 serves as a reminder that nothing is guaranteed.

Tunisia, though underdogs, will look to challenge Nigeria with key threats like Sabrine Ellouzi, who struck seven times in qualifying, and experienced forward Mariem Houij.

But the Super Falcons remain confident, backed by a blend of experience and fresh talent across the pitch.

Nigeria’s squad for the 2024 WAFCON in Morocco will don the following shirt numbers:

Goalkeepers:

  • 1 Tochukwu Oluehi
  • 16 Chiamaka Nnadozie

Defenders:

  • 2 Osinachi Ohale
  • 3 Rinsola Babajide
  • 5 Ashleigh Plumptre
  • 22 Michelle Alozie

Midfielders:

  • 7 Toni Payne
  • 10 Christy Ucheibe
  • 12 Jennifer Echegini
  • 13 Deborah Abiodun

Forwards:

  • 8 Asisat Oshoala
  • 9 Ifeoma Onumonu
  • 15 Rasheedat Ajibade (Captain)
  • 17 Francesca Ordega

A strong start against Tunisia would set the tone for Nigeria’s campaign in Group B, which also features Algeria and Botswana.

For Madugu’s side, “Mission X” is not just about winning matches, it’s about restoring Nigeria’s crown as queens of African football.
