Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles suffered a 1-0 defeat to defending champions Senegal in their opening Group D match at the African Nations Championship in Zanzibar.

The decisive goal came 15 minutes from time at the Amaan Stadium after a defensive lapse allowed Senegal to score with their only shot on target.

Goalkeeper Lawal Mustapha was caught off his line during the build-up, leaving the Lions of Teranga to capitalize.

Nigeria dominated possession and pushed forward through Tochukwu Michael and Olamilekan Adedayo but struggled to break down Senegal’s compact defence.

Defenders Leonard Ngenge and captain Junior Nduka held firm to prevent further damage, clearing a late effort off the line.

The defeat leaves Nigeria bottom of Group D with no points, while Congo and Sudan share top spot after their 1-1 draw.

The Eagles face Sudan next Tuesday in a must-win clash at the same venue.
