Barcelona’s hopes of returning to Camp Nou this weekend have been blocked after the city council refused to grant a permit for Sunday’s LaLiga clash with Real Sociedad.

The club had planned to host 27,000 fans at the partially renovated ground but officials cited unresolved safety and security concerns.

Barca will instead remain at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium in Montjuic, their temporary home since 2023, with work on Camp Nou already nine months behind schedule.

Civil protection chief Sebastia Massague confirmed “different elements” required fixing before the stadium could reopen.

Barca, who played their opening home game at the 6,000-capacity Estadi Johan Cruyff after a concert damaged the Montjuic pitch, said they are now working on amendments demanded by the council.

The Catalans also confirmed their Champions League group stage match against Paris Saint-Germain on October 1 will be staged at Montjuic.

Currently second in LaLiga, Barcelona sit five points adrift of Real Madrid but with a game in hand.
