Victor Osimhen’s first-half penalty gave Galatasaray a 1-0 victory over Liverpool in Istanbul, earning the Turkish side their first Champions League points of the season and condemning the Reds to back-to-back defeats.

The Nigerian striker struck from the spot after Baris Yılmaz was brought down by Dominik Szoboszlai, taking his tally to six goals in as many games against English clubs. Liverpool, error-strewn throughout, saw Florian Wirtz go closest before the break, while Alisson denied Osimhen again early in the second half but was forced off injured in the process.

Arne Slot’s side turned to Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak in search of a response, but Galatasaray’s defence held firm. A late penalty award for the visitors was overturned by VAR, sealing Liverpool’s fate.

The Reds, beaten by Crystal Palace in the league at the weekend, have now failed to win on their last three visits to Galatasaray and face renewed pressure ahead of Saturday’s trip to Chelsea.
