Nigeria’s Super Eagles concluded their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying journey with a decisive 4–0 win against the Benin Republic’s Cheetahs on Tuesday. Despite this impressive performance, they were unable to secure an automatic qualification spot for the tournament.
Victor Osimhen from Galatasaray was the standout player, netting a remarkable hat-trick with two goals in the first half and another in the second half, establishing Nigeria’s dominance throughout the match. Brentford’s Frank Onyeka capped off the scoring with a late goal, further emphasizing Nigeria’s superiority.
However, the Super Eagles’ victory was not sufficient, as South Africa secured the top position in Group C by defeating Rwanda 3–0 in Johannesburg, thereby clinching the automatic qualification slot.
Looking ahead, Nigeria’s focus will now shift to the playoff round, where they must fight for a chance to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hoping to rekindle the dreams of their many supporters.
