Brendan Rodgers has stepped down as Celtic manager with immediate effect, bringing an abrupt end to his second spell in charge of the Scottish champions.

The club confirmed the resignation in a statement on Monday, expressing gratitude for Rodgers’ contribution across his two tenures and acknowledging his role in “a period of continued success.”

The 51-year-old departs just days after Celtic’s 3-1 defeat to Hearts, a result that left the Hoops eight points behind leaders Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.

In the meantime, Celtic have turned to familiar faces to steady the ship, with former manager Martin O’Neill and ex-player Shaun Maloney taking temporary charge of first-team duties. The club said the process of appointing a new permanent manager is already underway.

Rodgers’ departure comes at a critical point in the season, with Celtic facing Falkirk on Wednesday before a potentially decisive League Cup clash against Rangers at the weekend.
