Algeria have suffered a setback ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations after midfielder Houssem Aouar was forced to withdraw from the squad through injury.

The Algerian Football Federation confirmed on Friday that Aouar was injured during training on Thursday, with no further details disclosed. He has been replaced in the squad by Himad Abdelli of French club Angers.

Aouar, who previously represented France before switching allegiance to Algeria, featured at the last AFCON in Ivory Coast, where the Desert Foxes exited at the group stage.

Algeria begin their Group E campaign in Morocco against Sudan in Rabat on Wednesday, before facing Burkina Faso and Equatorial Guinea.

Abdelli, who was a surprise omission from the initial 28-man list, has four international caps to his name.
