Mahrez Double Fires Algeria Past Sudan

Riyad Mahrez scored twice as Algeria made a confident start to their AFCON campaign with a 3-0 victory over Sudan in Group E in Rabat.

The captain struck both goals before half time, setting the tone for a dominant display, and Ibrahim Maza added his first international goal late on to seal the win.

The result lifted Algeria to the top of the group and saw Mahrez become the Desert Foxes’ all-time leading scorer at the Africa Cup of Nations with eight goals.

Mahrez insisted the performance was not about answering critics, stressing instead that Algeria must keep improving as they turn their focus to Sunday’s clash with Burkina Faso.
