Cameroon Ends South Africa Hoodoo to Reach AFCON Quarter-Finals

Cameroon ended a seven-game winless run against South Africa with a deserved 2-1 victory to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Bafana Bafana started on the front foot and created the early chances against a nervy Cameroon defence.

Relebohile Mofokeng squandered a golden opportunity when he raced clear but blazed over, before Lyle Foster saw an effort ruled out for offside following a VAR check.

Cameroon struggled to impose themselves in attack until they struck in the 34th minute. A corner was not properly cleared and the ball eventually fell to Junior Tchamadeu, who curled home his first international goal from close range.

The Indomitable Lions doubled their lead just two minutes after the restart as Aboubakar Nagida’s cross was expertly headed in by Christian Kofane from a tight angle.

South Africa responded with a series of changes and pressed hard for a way back, but goalkeeper Devis Epassy produced a superb display to frustrate them.

His standout moment came when he denied Samukele Kabini from close range before tipping Teboho Mokoena’s free kick around the post.

Bafana Bafana finally pulled one back late on through Evidence Makgopa, but they were unable to find an equaliser in stoppage time.

Cameroon held firm to secure the win and advance to the last eight where they will face hosts, Morroco who saw off Tanzania with a 1-0 win.
