Manchester City have sent a clear message in the Premier League title race by prioritising defensive reinforcements in the January transfer window, with a deal for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi now reportedly close to completion.

The England centre-back is expected to arrive at the Etihad Stadium as Pep Guardiola looks to address a growing injury crisis in central defence and close the six-point gap to league leaders Arsenal.

Guehi’s potential signing would bring leadership and Premier League experience to a City backline that has relied on youngsters in recent weeks.

The move would also cap an extensive squad rebuild that has seen City spend heavily over the past year. Since January 2025, the club have signed 14 players for around £414m, while offloading long-time stars such as Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker and Jack Grealish to lower the average age and wage bill.

Guehi has been admired by City for some time and is viewed as a long-term solution rather than a panic buy, with his ability to step straight into the first team seen as crucial for the title run-in.

His strong defensive record and big-game experience make him a major upgrade for a side needing a reliable presence at the back.

While the Guehi deal is not yet finalised, City have already enjoyed a quick return on their January spending.

New signing Antoine Semenyo has hit the ground running, scoring twice and providing an assist in his first two games since joining from Bournemouth.

City’s financial position has also supported their aggressive recruitment. Football finance expert Kieran Maguire highlighted that the club’s profits, player sales and reduced wage bill have left them with significant flexibility under profit and sustainability rules.

With Guehi likely to join and Semenyo already contributing, City have strengthened their squad at both ends of the pitch as they mount a serious challenge to Arsenal’s lead.
