Nigerian Artistes Miss Out on Grammy Wins as South Africa’s Tyla Shines
In a surprising turn of events at the 2026 Grammy Awards, Nigerian music icons Burna Boy, Davido, Omah Lay, Ayra Starr, and Wizkid left the ceremony without a single competitive award. Despite their strong presence across key categories, the artists faced stiff competition, ultimately falling short of taking home a trophy.
South Africa’s rising star, Tyla, clinched the Best African Music Performance award for her hit “Push 2 Start,” triumphing over notable Nigerian contenders including Burna Boy’s “Love,” Davido and Omah Lay’s “With You,” and Ayra Starr and Wizkid’s “Gimme Dat.” This victory marks Tyla’s second win in the category, having first made history in 2024 with her song “Water.”
In the Best Global Music Album category, Brazilian legends Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethânia won for their album “Caetano e Bethânia Ao Vivo,” leaving Burna Boy’s anticipated release “No Sign of Weakness” empty-handed.Despite the disappointment for Nigerian artists, the night was not without recognition for the country.
The late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Recording Academy, making him the first African artist to receive this prestigious accolade.
As the music world continues to evolve, Tyla’s success and Fela’s enduring legacy highlight the vibrant and diverse landscape of African music on the global stage.
