World number two Jannik Sinner and Jessica Pegula led a packed day of results as
they advanced to the third round of the Miami Open.
Sinner defeated Damir Dzumhur 6-3, 6-3, saying, “First round matches are never
easy, so I’m very happy,” as he continues his push for the ‘Sunshine Double’. He
added, “At times it worked very well… it’s very different than in Indian Wells.”
Pegula progressed in just 38 minutes after Francesca Jones retired, noting, “I was
just trying to focus on myself… stay super positive.”
Elsewhere, Daniil Medvedev rallied past Rei Sakamoto 6-7, 6-3, 6-1, while Felix
Auger-Aliassime beat Marton Fucsovics 7-6, 7-5.
Alexander Zverev cruised past Martin Damm 6-2, 6-4, but Ben Shelton was knocked
out by Alexander Shevchenko in three sets.
Jakub Mensik recovered from a slow start to defeat Adam Walton 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
In the women’s draw, Naomi Osaka was eliminated by Talia Gibson 7-5, 6-4, while
Coco Gauff rallied to beat Alycia Parks 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.
Mirra Andreeva defeated Marie Bouzkova 7-6, 6-2 to set up a clash with Victoria
Mboko, who beat Anastasia Zakharova 6-1, 7-5.
Leylah Fernandez also advanced, while Alexandra Eala beat Magda Linette 6-3, 7-6.
