The University of Jos has ordered the immediate evacuation of students from its hostels following a worsening security situation in Jos, Plateau State.

The directive was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by the institution’s Deputy Registrar for Information and Public Relations, Emmanuel Madugu. According to the statement, the decision was taken after violent incidents near the university heightened fears for student safety.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, ordered the evacuation in response to what the university described as “near chaotic scenarios” in surrounding areas.

“The evacuation is facilitated by His Excellency Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, who has provided transport services, fully authorised to carry out the assignment even within the curfew hours,” the statement added.

Students living within Jos and nearby areas were instructed to vacate the hostels from 3 pm on Wednesday, while those whose families reside outside the state are scheduled for evacuation starting 8 am on Thursday.

University authorities assured that adequate security measures have been put in place to protect campus facilities, while urging students and staff to remain calm as the situation develops.

The move follows a deadly attack in the Angwan Rukuba community, which reportedly resulted in multiple casualties and intensified tensions across the city.

Earlier, the Plateau State Government imposed a 48-hour curfew in Jos North Local Government Area to curb the unrest, later relaxing it to allow movement between 7 am and 3 pm daily. Despite this, fresh panic was reported on Wednesday morning, with alleged attacks on motorists and residents by hoodlums exploiting the eased restrictions.
