Canada coach Jesse Marsch praised his side’s historic 6-0 World Cup win but admitted the celebrations were overshadowed by Ismael Kone’s serious injury.

Kone suffered a broken leg following a challenge from Qatar’s Assim Madibo and was taken to hospital for surgery. Marsch revealed the incident deeply affected the squad.

“It happened right in front of the bench; we could all hear it,” Marsch said. “Everybody was crushed when it happened, but we had to find a way to stay focused.”

The Canada boss confirmed Madibo later apologised to Kone and insisted he did not believe there was any malicious intent behind the challenge.

Despite the setback, Canada secured their first-ever World Cup finals victory and moved to the top of Group B on goal difference.

“No Canadian will forget this day,” Marsch said. “I’m very proud of what we have accomplished. It’s a moment people can remember, but this will drive us to do everything we can to win the group and make a run at this tournament.”

Canada can now secure top spot in Group B when they face Switzerland in their final group match.
