James Maddison scored twice to deliver a shocker to the reigning champion Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. City started very well dominating the early part of the match but couldn’t put the ball behind the net which could have put them in the driver’s seat and gain total control of the match.

Man City scoring machine, Erling Haaland was up and running with all his killer skills and antics but it wasn’t meant to be city’s day as Tottenham were resilience in defence and dangerous at counter attacks. Spurs inflicted fifth straight defeat on Manchester City; goals from Maddison (2), Porro and Johnson secured 4-0 win; first time in his managerial career Pep Guardiola has had five straight losses.

James Maddison gave himself a worthy birthday gift by scoring twice against City within the first 20 minutes of the match on his 28th birthday. Typical of man City, anyone would have expected a big comeback in the second half but their hopes of a come back were dashed with two additional goals to give Pep Guardiola his heaviest defeat in his glorious career and to make things worse at the Etihad home ground of Man City. Tottenham team demonstrated a lot of wonderful skills during the match which frustrated the man city team. The opening goal with a wonderful delivery from Dejan Kulusevski’s which resulted in the opener by James Maddison rattled City and never recovered from the shock having conceded three more.

Just before the kick off, Etihad Stadium paid tribute to their reigning Ballon d’Or star Rodri with an elaborate ceremony to mark his Ballon d’Or victory.

Pep Guardiola after the match said “In this moment we are fragile defensively. We started really well as normal but we could not score and then after that we conceded. After that, we conceded some more which is difficult for our emotions right now. In eight years, we have never lived this kind of situation. Now we have to live it and break it by winning the next games, especially the next one. Now we see things in one way, maybe in a few weeks we will see it differently.”

For Tottenham coach, Ange Postecoglou, “It’s significant, when you understand the context of who we were playing. I’m proud of the lads, the football we played, the resilience and discipline we showed. When you play City, they test every aspect of your game and we handled that well.”
