Coco Gauff edged past Britain’s Jodie Burrage 6-3, 7-5 to secure her spot in the Australian Open third round on Wednesday.
The American third seed appeared in control at 3-1 in the second set, but Burrage launched a spirited fightback, winning four straight games to serve for the set.
However, Burrage faltered with back-to-back double faults, allowing Gauff to regain momentum and close out the match under the lights of Rod Laver Arena.
“She stepped up her level in the second set, and I just tried to stay offensive,” Gauff said of the hard-fought victory.
The win sets up a third-round clash for Gauff against former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez.
For Burrage, it was a disappointing end to her campaign, though her opening-round win marked a bright spot in her comeback from injury.
