Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has warned that the club is “playing with fire” if they fail to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window.

The injury-hit North London side is struggling in the Premier League, with just one win in their last 10 matches, leaving them 15th in the table closer to the relegation zone than European qualification.

Spurs currently have the longest injury list in the league, with 12 players sidelined, including record signing Dominic Solanke, who is set to miss six weeks with a knee injury.

Postecoglou has been forced to rely on young academy players to fill the gaps and revealed that he is in constant talks with the club’s technical director, Johan Lange, about bringing in reinforcements.

“This squad needs help, there’s no doubt about that,” Postecoglou said. “We’re playing with fire by not signing anyone, but the club is working to change the situation.”

Despite their poor league form, Spurs remain hopeful in cup competitions, holding a 1-0 lead over Liverpool in the League Cup semi-finals ahead of the second leg at Anfield on February 6.

In a boost for the team, key defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are nearing a return to action and could be available for the crucial clash.

“We’ll see how they progress in training over the next week,” Postecoglou added. “Both are expected to be fit around that time.”
