Atlético de Madrid have launched a furious attack on FC Barcelona amid growing speculation linking the Catalan giants with Argentine striker Julián Álvarez.

Reports of a €100 million Barcelona bid for Alvarez were swiftly dismissed by Atletico, who initially responded with a series of sarcastic social media posts joking about signing Lamine Yamal, Pedri and even Barcelona sporting director Deco.

However, the Madrid club soon dropped the humour and issued a strongly-worded statement accusing Barcelona of trying to destabilise one of their players through leaks, misinformation and a lack of respect.

“Over the past few months, we have been subjected to a relentless smear campaign against one of our players,” Atletico said.

The club also alleged there had been “calculated leaks, fake news and constant disrespect” before taking a swipe at Barcelona’s ongoing involvement in the Negreira case and the club’s player registration controversies.

The escalating war of words has further strained relations between the two Spanish giants, with Alvarez remaining at the centre of the growing transfer storm.
