Forty Year Old Cape Verde Goalkeeper Stunned Spain
Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, 40 years old, had around 50,000 Instagram followers before his outstanding display against Spain. After keeping a clean sheet, making seven crucial saves, and earning Man of the Match in the 0-0 draw, his following soared to more than 2 million.
Vozinha, the oldest African player at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has represented his country for 14 years. A 40-year-old goalkeeper from Portugal’s second division nearly single-handedly thwarted La Roja at the World Cup.
Despite Spain completing 734 passes, boasting 75% possession, and dominating play in Cape Verde’s half, one man refused to stick to the script.
Until yesterday, most football fans outside Cape Verde were unfamiliar with his name.
But against Spain, he became an impenetrable wall. With seven stunning saves and a remarkable 9.7 Sofascore rating, he secured a historic clean sheet.
Spain entered the World Cup as one of the favorites, while Cape Verde made their tournament debut. Yet when the final whistle blew, the focus shifted from Lamine Yamal and Spain’s midfield to the veteran goalkeeper who nearly stopped La Roja in their tracks.
After the match, Vozinha expressed his joy:
“I’ve dreamed about this my whole life. I’ve worked throughout my career for moments like these.”
The World Cup has a way of unveiling unexpected heroes, and this time, it’s a 40-year-old goalkeeper named “Grandma” who made Spain look ordinary.
