HAALAND EYES WORLD CUP SCORING RECORD AFTER NORWAY WIN
Erling Haaland has set his sights on becoming Norway’s outright top scorer in World Cup history after netting twice in a 4-1 victory over Iraq in their opening Group I match.
The Manchester City striker scored his 56th and 57th international goals as Norway marked their first World Cup appearance in 28 years with an impressive win.
His brace also saw him draw level with former midfielder Kjetil Rekdal as Norway’s joint-leading scorer in World Cup history.
“I have to tell him that I’m coming for that record. That’s fun. I’m going to send him a little message,” Haaland said after the match.
The 25-year-old was delighted with both his performance and Norway’s winning start.
“It’s great to debut in the World Cup, score two goals and win the match. I’m super happy. It was fun,” he said.
Despite the attention surrounding his display, Haaland insisted he remains focused on the task ahead.
“Of course I will try. It’s about continuing and not thinking too much. I’ll focus on the next game and be happy, but also stay calm.”
Former Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, working as a television pundit, praised Haaland’s efficiency in front of goal.
“Look at the efficiency. Two goals. The first goal was nice, and the second even better,” Ibrahimovic said.
The victory leaves Norway top of Group on goal difference ahead of France, with Haaland and his teammates now turning their attention to Monday’s clash against Senegal.
