FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran will participate in the 2026
FIFA World Cup, despite ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Infantino said Iran would “for sure” take part in the tournament, stressing that the
team had qualified on merit and represents its people.
He also expressed hope that the situation in the Middle East would be peaceful by
the time the competition begins.
Iran is coming for sure. We hope that by then the situation will be peaceful,” he said, adding that the players deserve to compete on the global stage.
Iran is scheduled to play their Group G matches in the United States, with two
games in Los Angeles and one in Seattle, with their base in Tucson, Arizona.
Their participation had been in doubt following the recent conflict involving the United
States and Israel, with Iran even raising the possibility of a boycott and requesting
their matches were moved to Mexico, a proposal FIFA rejected.
Infantino maintained that football should rise above political tensions, insisting the
sport plays a role in uniting people.
Sports should be outside of politics,” he said. “If there’s nobody else who believes in
building bridges, we are doing the job.”
The expanded 48-team tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and
Mexico kicks off on June 11.
