Mahmoud Mayele was the hero in Cairo as his 75th-minute strike handed Pyramids a 1-0 victory over Morocco’s Renaissance Berkane in the CAF Super Cup.

The Congolese forward, who recently converted to Islam and changed his name from Fiston to Mahmoud, sealed the win after capitalising on a costly error by Imad Riahi.

Mohamed Chibi dispossessed the Moroccan midfielder before releasing Mayele, who drilled a precise low shot beyond goalkeeper Munir Mohamedi and in off the far post.

It was a fitting moment for the 31-year-old, who top-scored with nine goals as Pyramids lifted the CAF Champions League last season. His strike secured a $500,000 prize and etched Pyramids’ name alongside Al Ahly and Zamalek as Egypt’s only Super Cup-winning clubs.

For Berkane, who triumphed in this competition three years ago, there was no repeat of past glory as they were undone by a moment of brilliance and composure from Mayele.
