Nigeria’s Super Falcons confirmed their place at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations despite being held to a 1–1 draw by Benin Republic in Abeokuta on Tuesday, advancing 3–1 on aggregate to keep their title defence alive.

Ashley Plumptre gave Nigeria the perfect start with her first international goal in the 13th minute, heading home from an Esther Okoronkwo corner.

But the visitors, showing remarkable spirit, clawed their way back into the contest when Yasminath Djibril struck a stunning free-kick just past the hour mark to level matters.

The result mattered little in the end as the Falcons’ 2–0 victory in the first leg in Lome provided enough cushion for the ten-time African champions to secure safe passage to Morocco, where they will chase an 11th continental crown.

In front of a lively crowd in Abeokuta, the Falcons displayed control and composure for long spells.

Asisat Oshoala and Rasheedat Ajibade both came close to restoring Nigeria’s lead, while goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was called into action to deny Gandonou and Gnammi as Benin pressed with belief.

Despite the nervy finish, Nigeria’s experience proved decisive. The qualification keeps Justine Madugu side on course to defend the crown they won in Morocco earlier this year, a feat that could also book them a spot at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
