Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick says it is “about the team” as his
side prepare to face West Ham United this week.
United head to London on a four-game unbeaten run since Carrick replaced Ruben
Amorim, a run that has kept them in the top four with Chelsea close behind.
Despite recent praise from captain Bruno Fernandes, Carrick insisted the focus must
remain on collective improvement.
Carrick said Fernandes is “a really intelligent footballer” who cares deeply about the
club, adding that it is nice when respected players speak well of him, but stressed that
getting the best out of the team together is what truly matters.
He also admitted it is too early to judge his success, noting that “nothing’s really
happened yet” and that there is still plenty to play for before the end of the season.
The United boss expects a difficult test against West Ham, who are pushing for survival
after their recent win over Burnley.
Carrick warned that both sides have “a lot to fight for” and said his team are fully aware
of how challenging Tuesday night’s match will be.
On team news, Carrick confirmed Mason Mount is unlikely to be available for the game,
saying he will “probably not” be ready yet but could return soon after, while Matthijs de
Ligt is improving and “moving in the right direction” as he continues his recovery.
