Kwankwaso Quits NNPP, Set for Political Realignment Ahead of 2027
Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), signaling a major shift in Nigeria’s political landscape as parties begin early positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso, who was the NNPP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, announced his resignation in a statement on Sunday, describing the decision as necessary in view of evolving political realities in the country.
According to him, the move was driven by the need for “strategic realignment” in order to pursue a more viable platform capable of delivering meaningful national change. He, however, did not immediately disclose his next political destination.
The former governor, a prominent political figure in northern Nigeria and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, expressed appreciation to the party leadership, including its National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, and other stakeholders for their support during his time in the NNPP.
Kwankwaso’s exit is expected to significantly impact the NNPP, particularly in Kano State, where the party has maintained a strong grassroots base largely due to his influence.
Sources within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) indicate that the former governor is set to formally join the party, with a public declaration expected in Kano. Party leaders, including David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola, are reportedly preparing to receive him into the fold.
Political analysts say the move reflects ongoing realignments across Nigeria’s opposition space, as parties and key figures seek stronger alliances to challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Kwankwaso’s potential defection could also reshape political dynamics in the North-West, a critical voting bloc in national elections. His loyal support base, coupled with his experience as a former minister and senator, makes him a significant asset to any political platform.
The development follows a broader trend of shifting alliances among Nigeria’s political elite, with several actors repositioning ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Observers say the coming months may witness further defections and coalition-building efforts as political actors intensify preparations for 2027.
