The Plateau State Government has imposed a 48-hour curfew on Jos North Local Government Area following a deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba community that left several people dead and many others injured.

The curfew, announced by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, took effect from midnight on March 29 and is expected to last until April 1, 2026. Authorities said the measure was necessary to restore calm and prevent further breakdown of law and order.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the attack, describing it as “barbaric and unprovoked,” and assured residents that security agencies were working to apprehend those responsible.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers, suspected to be armed gunmen, stormed the community on motorcycles on Sunday evening, opening fire on residents and passersby. Initial reports indicate that at least six people were killed, while several others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Residents described scenes of panic as the attackers targeted individuals along the roadside before fleeing the area ahead of the arrival of security operatives. The incident triggered protests by some youths, who briefly blocked roads in anger before being dispersed by security forces.

The latest violence highlights the persistent insecurity in Plateau State, particularly in Jos North and surrounding communities, where clashes, attacks and reprisals have occurred over the years. In recent months, the state has witnessed renewed violence, including deadly ambushes in Kanam Local Government Area and previous large-scale attacks in Bokkos and Barkin Ladi.

Plateau has long struggled with complex security challenges linked to communal tensions, land disputes and criminal activities, making it one of Nigeria’s most volatile regions.

Authorities say the curfew will allow security agencies to stabilise the situation, conduct investigations and prevent further attacks.

Residents have, however, called for sustained security presence and stronger preventive measures, warning that recurring violence continues to threaten lives, livelihoods and social stability in the state.
