GERMANY SCRAPE PAST RESILIENT USA IN FINAL TEST.
Germany closed out their World Cup preparations with a narrow 2-1 win over the
USA in Chicago, surviving a strong fightback from the hosts.
Julian Nagelsmann’s side made the perfect start when Kai Havertz headed home
inside two minutes from Joshua Kimmich’s free-kick delivery.
The USA responded well and levelled before half-time through Antonee Robinson,
who smashed a stunning volley into the roof of the net after Germany failed to clear
a corner.
Germany regained control after the break and restored their lead on the counter, with
Leroy Sané finishing off a sharp move involving Havertz to make it 2-1.
The hosts pushed late through Christian Pulisic and Brenden Aaronson, but Oliver
Baumann stood firm as Germany held on to secure victory.
It was far from comfortable, but a winning end to preparations for Germany, while the
USA will take positives from a competitive display against elite opposition.
