Foreign Affairs Minister Tuggar Resigns, Eyes Bauchi Governorship Race
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has resigned from office as he prepares to contest the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi State, marking a significant political shift ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The resignation was confirmed on Monday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, who disclosed that Tuggar stepped down in compliance with a federal directive requiring political appointees seeking elective office to vacate their positions.
The directive, issued by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, mandates ministers, advisers and heads of agencies to resign on or before March 31, 2026. The policy aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act aimed at preventing conflicts of interest and ensuring a level playing field ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Tuggar, who is expected to contest under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is widely regarded as an experienced diplomat and policy strategist. Before his ministerial appointment, he served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany and held several roles in both the public and private sectors.
His exit underscores the growing momentum of political repositioning across Nigeria, as key actors begin early preparations for the next electoral contest. Bauchi State, a politically strategic state in the North-East, is expected to witness intense competition among major parties.
Political analysts say the enforcement of resignation requirements could strengthen transparency in the electoral process by separating governance from political ambition. However, it also signals the beginning of a broader wave of resignations and alignments within government circles.
Tuggar’s tenure as foreign minister saw Nigeria engage in diplomatic efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and reposition its global image, particularly in Europe and multilateral institutions.
With his resignation now confirmed, attention will shift to his political campaign and how his experience in diplomacy translates into domestic governance ambitions.
