SERENA WILLIAMS MAKES WINNING RETURN IN QUEEN’S CLUB DOUBLE COMEBACK.
Former world number one Serena Williams marked her return to competitive tennis
with a victorious comeback, partnering Victoria Mboko to beat Erin Routliffe and
Nicole Melichar-Martinez 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 at Queen’s Club.
The 44-year-old, back after four years away from the sport, said she “had so much
fun” as she rolled back the years in a composed and powerful display on the grass.
“I got nervous like, maybe 30 minutes before… then I just let it go,” Williams said. “I
thought about having fun, which I did.”
Despite admitting she rated her performance a “C minus,” Williams produced flashes
of her trademark serving and aggression to help seal a straight-sets win in the first
round.
Her partner, Mboko, praised the experience of playing alongside the 23-time Grand
Slam champion, saying: “I think I can learn a lot… she’s got it.”
Williams now progresses to the quarter-finals as speculation grows over a possible
continued comeback, including potential appearances beyond Queen’s Club.
