Southampton have been expelled from the Championship play-offs after being found
guilty of spying on semi-final opponents Middlesbrough.

The EFL confirmed the punishment on Tuesday after Southampton admitted to
multiple breaches involving the unauthorised filming of opposition training sessions
before matches.

The club had beaten Middlesbrough in the play-off semi-finals, but Boro formally
requested Southampton’s removal from the competition following the investigation.

An independent disciplinary commission ruled in Middlesbrough’s favour, expelling
Southampton from the play-offs, and also handing the club a four-point deduction for
The 2026/27 Championship season.

As a result, Middlesbrough have been reinstated and will now face Hull City at
Wembley for a place in the Premier League.

“Middlesbrough Football Club welcomes the outcome,” the club said in a statement.

“We believe this sends out a clear message regarding sporting integrity and
conduct.”

Southampton is reported to have appealed the decision, meaning uncertainty still
remains to be seen whether the play-off final will go ahead as scheduled.
