Tinubu, Governors, Thousands of Delegates Gather in Abuja for APC National Convention
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, members of the Federal Executive Council, 32 state governors and over 8,000 delegates are set to converge in Abuja for the National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a major milestone in the ruling party’s political calendar.
The two-day convention, holding at Eagle Square, is expected to produce a new set of party leaders and shape the direction of the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections. Party officials say the gathering will also serve as a platform to consolidate the administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”
Briefing journalists ahead of the event, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed that about 8,453 accredited delegates from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory would participate in the convention.
He described the theme, “Unity in Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda,” as a reflection of the party’s commitment to continuity, internal cohesion and policy alignment between the party and government.
According to Idris, the convention will combine leadership elections with policy discussions and strategic planning, offering an opportunity for the party to assess its performance since assuming power in 2023.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Convention Central Coordinating Committee and former Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari, assured party members and observers that preparations had been concluded for a smooth and credible exercise.
He emphasised that the APC would strictly adhere to its zoning arrangement in line with federal character principles, noting that party offices have been distributed across geopolitical zones to ensure inclusiveness and balance.
Masari dismissed concerns over potential litigation, stating that the party had not been formally served with any court processes related to the convention.
The APC, Nigeria’s ruling party since 2015, has relied on national conventions as a key mechanism for leadership renewal and internal democracy. However, such events have sometimes been marred by disputes over zoning, candidate selection and allegations of exclusion.
Despite these concerns, party leaders insist that the convention will reinforce unity within the APC and position it strongly ahead of future electoral contests.
