A 500-level student of Covenant University, Toluwase Jesutunmise, has died after collapsing during a football training session on campus.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, has sparked renewed concerns about student health monitoring and emergency response systems in tertiary institutions.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the university confirmed that the student had actively participated in the training before stepping aside, complaining of leg pain and fatigue. Moments later, teammates reportedly noticed him gasping for breath, prompting an immediate emergency response.

Jesutunmise was quickly rushed to the university’s medical centre, located near the training ground, where medical personnel initiated resuscitation procedures. These included cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). Despite these efforts, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the emergency unit.

The Vice-Chancellor, Timothy Anake, described the late student as diligent and vibrant, noting that his passing represents a profound loss to the university community.

According to preliminary findings by the institution, a previously undisclosed heart condition may have led to the incident. The university also stated that there was no negligence on the part of its medical team, emphasising that all necessary emergency equipment was available and properly utilised.

Management further disclosed that officials have remained in close contact with the bereaved family, offering continued support. The institution extended its condolences, adding that the tragic loss has left the entire campus community in mourning.
