Tension has enveloped Federal Government College Ikot Ekpene following the death of a 12-year-old student, Ufokobong Edwin Godwin, allegedly after being bullied by a senior student.

The incident, which reportedly began before the Easter break, has sparked widespread concern among parents and residents in Uyo. According to accounts gathered, the Junior Secondary School 2 (JSS 2) student was allegedly assaulted after refusing to share his provisions with a senior student during terminal examinations.

A fellow student, who requested anonymity, claimed the senior student struck the boy on the neck, leading to repeated episodes of unconsciousness before he was eventually rescued by other students. The victim was said to have been hospitalised on Easter Sunday after developing severe complications from the injury.

Reports indicate that although the boy initially regained consciousness and returned to school, his parents were not informed of the incident before taking him home for the holiday. At home, his condition reportedly worsened, with complaints of intense neck and throat pain.

He was later rushed to the hospital, where he died. Medical findings, according to sources, linked his death to complications arising from blood clots around the neck area.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, said she would confirm the incident but had yet to provide further details as of press time.

The school principal, Jude Ezeogu, described the development as unfortunate, noting that the entire school community is in mourning.

“It’s an unfortunate incident. He is our child, a Nigerian child, and we are deeply touched by his demise,” he said, adding that the school management committee would review the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Meanwhile, the deceased’s family has called on the Federal Government to launch a full investigation into the incident. The boy’s father, speaking briefly, appealed for justice, stating that he would provide more details at the appropriate time.
