No fewer than 236 Lagos State students have been safely evacuated from Jos, following rising security concerns and threats to their lives, the National Union of Lagos State Students (NULASS) has confirmed.

The emergency operation was triggered by a distress message from a student in Jos, who warned of worsening insecurity and imminent danger. “Ejooor oh. I wanna live… Jos is hot now, Sir,” the message read, sparking urgent action.

Responding swiftly, NULASS National President, Hafiz Olufowobi, constituted a five-member emergency response committee led by Vice President II (Diaspora), Oluwadarasimi Lawal, to coordinate the evacuation.

The committee worked closely with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Tertiary Education through the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Olawale Kappo, to ensure the safe relocation of affected students.

At the University of Jos, officials provided a verified list of 602 Lagos indigenes and residents. However, due to the urgency of the situation and communication challenges, 236 students were successfully processed for evacuation via a digital registration platform.

As conditions deteriorated, the evacuation was carried out under tight security, with support from the Plateau State Police Command. Armed officers escorted the students out of Jos.

The Lagos State Government, through the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, provided buses and stipends to aid the journey.

The students departed Jos under heavy security and arrived safely in Lagos on Sunday evening, where they were received by top government officials, including Permanent Secretary Kasali Adeniran, alongside NULASS executives.

The union commended the swift intervention of the state government, particularly Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, as well as Commissioner for Youth Mobolaji Ogunlede, for prioritising student safety.

NULASS also praised members of its emergency response committee for their dedication, while calling on state governments nationwide to adopt proactive measures to protect students and citizens during crises.
