University of Benin Secures Full NUC Accreditation for All Degree Programmes
The University of Benin has announced that all its academic programmes have received full accreditation from the National Universities Commission, marking a significant milestone for the institution and reinforcing its standing within Nigeria’s higher education system.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Benedicta Ehanire, disclosed that the achievement followed a comprehensive accreditation exercise conducted by the NUC between October and November last year. The results of the assessment were formally communicated to the university in a letter dated April 7, 2026, addressed to the Vice-Chancellor.
Accreditation by the NUC is a critical benchmark for Nigerian universities, as it determines whether academic programmes meet minimum standards in areas such as staffing, infrastructure, curriculum quality, and research output. Programmes that fail accreditation risk suspension, which can disrupt students’ academic progression and affect the institution’s reputation.
For years, many universities across the country have struggled with partial accreditation status due to challenges such as inadequate funding, shortage of qualified lecturers, and outdated facilities. Against this backdrop, the University of Benin’s announcement signals a notable improvement in compliance with regulatory standards and institutional capacity.
The university noted that the accreditation exercise covered all faculties, schools, and specialised centres, reflecting what it described as sustained investment in academic quality and administrative reforms. Observers say the development could boost student confidence, attract prospective applicants, and strengthen the university’s competitiveness both locally and internationally.
Founded in 1970 and located in Benin City, the University of Benin is one of Nigeria’s leading federal universities, known for its diverse academic offerings and large student population.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the development, noting that full accreditation across all programmes is rare and represents a benchmark for other institutions striving to meet regulatory expectations.
The achievement comes at a time when the Nigerian university system is under increasing scrutiny to improve quality assurance, enhance global relevance, and produce graduates equipped to meet evolving labour market demands.
