In a remarkable display of intellectual prowess, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) emerged victorious in the 2026 University Duel Best Brains Competition, decisively defeating the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) with a score of 107 to 62 points. This triumph marks a significant milestone for OAU, which has consistently demonstrated excellence in academic competitions.

The competition attracted over 60 universities, including notable institutions such as the University of Ibadan (UI), University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), University of Lagos (Unilag), and Covenant University. Last year’s champions, Covenant University, were unexpectedly eliminated by OAU, further solidifying the university’s reputation as a formidable contender.

OAU’s path to the finals saw them overcome UI in a gripping semi-final match, showcasing their strategic depth and intellectual agility. Representing OAU were three exceptional students: Quayum Alli from the Department of Electrical/Electronic Engineering, who was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the competition, along with Adesina Lekan from the Department of Computer Science and Ogungbayi Imran from Electrical/Electronic Engineering.

The atmosphere leading up to the grand finale was charged with anticipation. OAU’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, had emphasized the importance of the competition in his motivating address: “You represent not only your individual capacities but the distilled intellectual heritage of this University. Approach this contest with clarity of thought, disciplined execution, and the quiet confidence that defines true scholars. Bring the trophy home.”

Professor Adeolu Odedire, the Dean of Students Affairs, praised the team for their performance, highlighting it as a validation of OAU’s enduring culture of academic distinction, teamwork, and structured mentorship. He urged the team to maintain their focus and finish strong.

Dr. Lukman Olasunkanmi, the Vice-Dean, echoed these sentiments, expressing gratitude towards the university management for their unwavering support, which he deemed critical to the team’s success.

As OAU celebrates this victory, the university community rallies behind its champions, hoping this achievement will inspire future generations of scholars to pursue excellence. With their remarkable journey characterized by hard work and dedication, OAU’s team has not only claimed the trophy but has also reinforced the institution’s legacy of academic brilliance.

This victory is more than just a trophy; it is a testament to the hard work, discipline, and intellectual legacy that OAU embodies. Here’s to many more wins ahead.
