Fluminense captain Thiago Silva found double delight after Monday’s 2-0 victory over Inter Milan in the Club World Cup round of 16, celebrating not only his team’s historic feat but also striking a blow for his former club’s city rivals.
Silva, 40, who rejoined his boyhood side Fluminense last year, spent three seasons with AC Milan between 2009 and 2012, winning Serie A and the Italian Super Cup.
Speaking after the match in Charlotte, he admitted thoughts of his old fanbase crossed his mind.
“I’m sure the Milan fans will be happy about Inter’s defeat and our victory,” Silva told DAZN.
The veteran defender, previously with PSG and Chelsea, hailed Fluminense’s display against the Champions League runners-up.
“This is a very important result for us. We knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game. Today we played an incredible match,” Silva said. “We were always together. Defensively we played an excellent match.”
Fluminense will face Al Hilal in Friday’s quarter-final.
