IHEANACHO PENALTY SETS UP DRAMATIC TITLE SHOWDOWN BETWEEN CELTIC AND HEARTS.
Super Eagles of Nigeria forward Kelechi Iheanacho scored a dramatic 99th-minute
penalty as Celtic snatched a thrilling 3-2 win over Motherwell to keep the Scottish
Premiership title race alive until the final day.
Celtic looked set to lose ground after Liam Gordon’s late equaliser for Motherwell,
but deep into stoppage time, VAR spotted a possible handball by Sam Nicholson and
referee John Beaton pointed to the spot.
Iheanacho kept his composure to calmly convert the decisive penalty and move
Celtic to within one point of leaders Hearts heading into a blockbuster final-day
showdown.
Hearts remain favourites to win their first league title since 1960 after a 3-1 victory at
Tynecastle, but Celtic’s late escape ensured the race will go down to the wire.
Daizen Maeda and Benjamin Nygren had earlier scored for Celtic after Elliot Watt
opened the scoring for Motherwell.
Hearts boss Derek McInnes blasted the late penalty decision, describing it as
“disgusting” and insisting his side is “up against everything” in their bid to end the
Old Firm dominance.
Celtic captain Callum McGregor, however, said the champions deserved to take the
title race to the final day after winning seven straight league matches.
