Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim believes defender Harry Maguire deserves a return to the England squad, praising his leadership and improved performances this season.
Maguire, 31, has earned 64 caps for England but was left out of the squad for the 2024 European Championship, where the Three Lions finished as runners-up after a 2-1 defeat to Spain in July.
Despite losing the United captaincy under former manager Erik ten Hag in 2023, Maguire has bounced back with strong displays, including scoring crucial winners against Leicester City in the FA Cup fourth round and Ipswich Town in the Premier League last month.
New England manager Thomas Tuchel, who replaced Gareth Southgate in October, is set to name his first squad this month for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia.
“If it’s enough is with the national coach. I would be really happy for him, I think he deserves (it),” Amorim told reporters ahead of United’s FA Cup fifth-round clash with Fulham on Sunday.
“He is a great guy, I think he still needs to improve because when you are a player, you can always improve. But I think his performances at the moment are quite good, and he is more of a leader now. That can help a national team, so I hope he is in the squad for the next games.”
