ARNALDI SURVIVES TIAFOE’S EPIC FIGHTBACK TO REACH FRENCH OPEN QUARTER-FINALS.
Matteo Arnaldi battled past Frances Tiafoe in a marathon five-set contest to reach
the French Open quarter-finals on Tuesday.
The Italian prevailed 7-6 (7/5), 6-7 (5/7), 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 after five hours and 26
minutes, securing his place in the last eight for the first time.
Arnaldi looked on the brink of defeat when Tiafoe surged into a double-break lead in
the fourth set, but the Italian produced a remarkable comeback to force a decider
and eventually seal victory.
“I don’t know how I am standing here,” Arnaldi said after his second consecutive five-
hour match in Paris. “At some point, it wasn’t tennis, it was something else.”
The 24-year-old admitted that fatigue had become a major factor, but found enough
energy to edge past the American in the closing stages.
Arnaldi will now face fellow Italian Matteo Berrettini for a place in the semi-finals.
