ARNALDI REACHES MAIDEN GRAND SLAM SEMI-FINAL AFTER BERRETTINI RETIRES.
Matteo Arnaldi advanced to the first Grand Slam semi-final of his career after fellow
Italian Matteo Berrettini retired injured during their French Open quarter-final on
Wednesday.
Arnaldi was leading 7-5, 5-2 when Berrettini was struggling with an apparent hip
problem was forced to end his challenge early in the second set.
The victory sends world number 104 Arnaldi into an all-Italian semi-final against
Flavio Cobolli, guaranteeing Italy a place in Sunday’s final.
“It’s a tough one. You never want someone’s tournament to end like this,” Arnaldi
said. “I hope Matteo recovers quickly.”
Despite spending nearly 18 hours on court during his run to the last eight, Arnaldi
showed little sign of slowing down as he continued his dream campaign in Paris.
“I’m tired, that’s for sure,” he admitted. “But I’m giving everything I have.”
