Chelsea F.C. have confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as their new manager on a four-year contract beginning in July.
The former Liverpool F.C. midfielder becomes Chelsea’s latest permanent boss after leaving Real Madrid CF by mutual consent in January, less than a year into his deal.
Alonso arrives at Stamford Bridge with a growing reputation after guiding Bayer 04 Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title in 2024, alongside German Cup success.
His appointment was confirmed just a day after Chelsea’s FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City F.C., with the Blues hoping the 44-year-old can bring stability after another turbulent campaign.
Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club,” Alonso said.
“We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.”
Chelsea have already gone through Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior this season, while interim coach Calum McFarlane will remain in charge for the club’s final two Premier League matches.
Alonso enjoyed a glittering playing career with Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, while also winning the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships with Spain national football team.
