SABALENKA OUTCLASSES OSAKA IN FRENCH OPEN NIGHT SESSION SHOWPIECE.
Aryna Sabalenka underlined her title credentials with a straight-sets victory over
Naomi Osaka in a blockbuster French Open night-session clash on Monday.
The world number one defeated the four-time Grand Slam champion 7-5, 6-3 in a
high-quality fourth-round encounter on Court Philippe Chatrier, ending Osaka’s
impressive run in Paris.
For much of the contest, the pair traded powerful groundstrokes in an entertaining
battle between two of the women’s game’s biggest stars. But Sabalenka’s superior
power and variety eventually proved decisive as she pulled away in the second set.
The match marked the first women’s night session at Roland Garros since 2023 and
was played before a near-capacity crowd.
“I hope this is the beginning and we open the door to more women’s night sessions,”
Sabalenka said after her victory.
Osaka echoed those sentiments, saying she was honoured to feature in the
showcase slot and hoped women’s matches would continue to receive the same
platform.
With the spotlight firmly on them, both players delivered, producing one of the
tournament’s most anticipated contests and a fitting advertisement for women’s
tennis.
