Atalanta must believe they can win the Serie A title, manager Gian Piero Gasperini said after their emphatic 4-0 victory over Juventus on Sunday moved them within three points of league leaders Inter Milan, whom they face next week.
The Bergamo side delivered a dominant performance at the Allianz Stadium, climbing to third place with 58 points ahead of a crucial showdown against defending champions Inter.
“We must never stop dreaming,” Gasperini said. “People may say it’s impossible, but if you believe, anything can happen. We know Inter and Napoli are strong, but maybe our losing streak against Inter is a sign that things can change.”
Ending Juventus’ five-game winning streak, Atalanta secured their most decisive victory in Turin, which Gasperini hailed as “a sensational result.”
“The scoreline speaks for itself. It’s hard to imagine such a win given Juventus’ form, but we played an almost perfect game,” he added.
Gasperini also praised Ademola Lookman, who netted his 13th Serie A goal, despite recent criticism of his penalty-taking.
“Lookman became a fantastic player when he started thinking more about the team,” he said. “He made Atalanta great, and Atalanta made him great. I’m convinced he’ll one day wear the captain’s armband.”
